I think Corsair's "War" idea would go well with a Japanese Shogun or Chinese Warring States/Three Kingdoms-type setting.  The Hero could help the rightful candidate become Emperor.

Or maybe he could (Unknowingly, of course) help one of the wrongful candidates.

You've got a lot of potential for individual quests for the different classes too:  the Fighter would have to prove himself in martial arts duels, the Thief could fall in with a ninja clan, the Paladin could learn about bushido, the Wizard could be inducted into Taoist mysteries (that would make for a cool spell list).

Yeah, but if you mess up, you'd have to perform Seppuku. That would suck. Make a cool death message, though  Cheesy .

Hmm...this series can't have Japanese brothels, can it? Darn!

Kiku-san from Shogun rocked!  Cheesy

I'm not sure that the geisha-type concubine can really be associated with "brothels".  But that brings to fore the issue of the Hero's possible future romantic interests, if the latter QFGs are any basis to go by.  A "Kiku-san"-ish character would be good for the Fighter or maybe Paladin....as for the Wizard, well, supernatural feminine spirits are a powerful motif in Asian mythologies, so we could have the Asian answer to Erana there.

I can envision the Thief doing many espionage/assassination sidequests in enemy warlords' palaces (where he conviently pockets any valuables he finds, of course) as a unique way for his class to advance the plot.

In H7, the Thief should get a ninja outfit.

Well, excuse me for going Off-topic, but from what I remember, Kiku-san was an honest-to-god prostitute. Payed for sex and everything.

In other news, Silverbolt now has 100 posts. Yay?

You're right.  I got Kiku confused with Mariko, who obviously wasn't a geisha or prostitute.  A Mariko-type character would be necessary in an Asian setting to help out the Hero and be his guide, and be a good romantic interest for the Fighter or Paladin.  What kind of female character would go well with the Thief, sort of like that moneychanger from Shapeir?

The Wizard plot should have either a quest for enlightenment where he goes off in search of a hermit master to teach him new spells and stuff, and/or a quest to find out the recipe to brew a powerful magical potion, since the Taoist alchemists were always looking for that magical alchemical brew that made one immortal.

For the thief I suggest a Ninja female.

The magic-user could go looking for some legendary wizard, and, you know, you're expecting someone like Erasmus, and you find the tower or whatever, and it's a hot woman.

Yeh, Ninja female sounds like a plan.
