Nothing makes up for a good, big, heavy, shiney sword.

Sharp metal thingy has to stick into soft fleshy thingy for it to work.

What could be simpler?

I think we've had this argument before.

Swords have their advantages. Any village dimwit can understand the basics: "blunt end goes in your hand, sharp end goes in the enemy."

Just because magic is more subtle though, doesn't make it any less useful. Depending on your level of skill, of course. Beginner mages are often worse off than beginner fighters.
