A Shape-Shifter would be cool. Somebody who is just, you know, having a pint at the tavern or standing around, and if you talk to him, he's like..

"Ah, I've been waiting for you. I have a gift for you!" and then he morphs into like a Demon or something nifty like that.

Random monsters, I think.

Maybe we could do a twist on spiritshadows, creatures bound in an alternate world and reduced to a kind of physical shadow that can only be harmed by light, or be destroyed by trapping it in complete darkness

Great idea for a quest monster:

Have the Pontianak appear as an "unbeatable" monster. You can beat it, but you don't get full points (think of the Spieldburg Ambush canyon in HQ1. There is a better way...). Then have a nail-like object (stake, railroad spike, empty quill pen...) somewhere and a reference to Pontianaks in a book somewhere. They can use the Pontianak to change the monster into a woman, and then proceed. Paladins could save her (duh), and wizards could learn magic from her. Fighters could even fight her for practice afterward. Thieves...don't know. Ideas?
That's an interesting suggestion.

Ignus, could you elaborate on your idea please?

As I said, Thieves could hit on her.

spiritshadows were creatures in the seventh tower series. they'rer creatures bound by magic in an alternate worrld to obey a master, then taken into the  other world, a process that reduced them to living shadows. while they're shadows,  they can't be hurt  except by light-emmiting weapons, light magic, etc. also, since all shadows require light to exist, the creatures can be starved by imprisonment in total darkness.

So you could kill them with a torch. Nifty.

Ignus, what can these shadow creatures do then, if they can't hurt others?

Argh, I misread. Thanks for pointing that out, Corsair.

Anyway, what can these shadows do, Ignus?

well, they have a shadow of whatever powers that they possessed while they were ordinary (or not so ordinary) creatures. the lesser creatures that are bound  are weaker,  but  can take  on a  larger  variety  of  shapes,  as  they  are closer to  formless as shadows than  the  more  powerful creatures. on  the  other   hand, the  more  powerful creatures  are less malleable,  but  have potent abilities.  a  giant wasplike insect with a projectile  and acid sting  might become a shadow  able  to  shoot a corrosive dart, or a carnivorous carpet of grass might stay  basically the same. I  should  probably note that  the shadows  are  very much tangible, and  that  physical  damage  will  hurt  them,  though  will not  be  able  to  seriously  injure them.

Honestly though, I think it would make more sense to you if you read the books. Seventh tower series,  by Garth Nix.
