I have read that you are removing (or not writing) some of the more detailed back-story to focus on the present story, while I agree that this is important to keep the player up to speed, a detailed back-story could be included as an optional read.. Something with a little more detail that could be read ahead of time.. This would also help the player to get into the story and suspend disbelief durring gameplay.

Not a bad idea, actually. Heck, you don't even have to put it in the game itself if you don't want to. Just write it out in a pdf and list it as an optional download.
