Or maybe he just like using geometric shapes as defensive formations.

Another thing...they give people in video games these HUGE swords. They're taller than they are, and a lot of times, thicker as well. It's ridiculous! The people aren't using swords, they're using cleavers!

Sometimes.  Cloud certainly qualifies. And the guy with the gunblade (gunswords, gundaggers and gunaxes do actually exist and were used, typically by sailors, but they were sabres, not Cloud-sized "clevers" as you and a lot of other people put it).  And let's not forget the keyblade in Kingdom Hearts.

I would not have a problem with these weapons, if they allowed for leverage and realistic handling, not just.. superhuman strength built into a slender lightweight guy that couldn't lift it well enough to swing it in the first place.

As for the pike square... military tactics copy and adapt off of each other; otherwise they'd be useless, wouldn't they?

By the way... The very first battle that involved the needleguns was also the very first battle that washed over into a town and, essentially, created urban combat.  I believe it was the Franco-Prussian war, but I won't swear to that.

I know this topic is months out of use, but I feel some issues need to be addressed.

Dude, it's not real, they're allowed to carry swords and use them Advent Children style against people with guns purely for sheer coolness factor. If every game had to be anally realistic, most of them wouldn't be fun.

Oh and it's a CAWS (with a 'C') autoshotgun, but it's never been taken into production. The US armed forces went with a Benelli instead.

As for why always a sword instead of an axe or a spear... no real intelligent reason, just that swords look cooler. I know what I'd rather have. That and a sword is more of  duelling/close combat weapon, axes (especially halberds) and spears tend to be massed-ranks weapons and there fore not really lone hero potential. A knight's chirished weapon was his sword, but the weapon he used more often was the lance.

Oh and the Buster sword is less a cleaver (although that is an apt description) and more of a bearing sword. You should see some of the crazier Zweihanders (ala Soul Calibur), MASSIVE.

i quite like guns and swords together
my favourite weapon is actually the gunblade from FF8
although for that i would combine a blade with a shotgun  cheesy

in a D&D game my friend plays an artificer crafter and i managed to convince him and the DM to craft me a gunblade.
nothing overly powerful of course, the basic idea was a bastard sword combined with a small crossbow.
fire as per crossbow until melee then use as a b.sword.
had to spend the cost of a bsword, a small crossbow, attaching together, spend a feat as well.
on a crit (if reloaded) i can fire my crossbow together with the attack from the b.sword as a free action (roll to hit normally).
it was a pretty cool concept and i loved having 1  laugh

i'm looking forward to hiring some black market people to attach a vibroblade to my blaster in star wars if/when we start playing  Wink

Heh nice.

Yeah guns are still pretty cool. I'm currently working on several different types of blade/firearm combinations for the Modern Fantasy add-on for the roleplay I'm writing.

My favourite gunblades were actually the ones from Advent Children rather than FF8's gunblades.

i think they have some weapons like that in the Phantasy Star series

explains why i like that series more than Final Fantasy haha ~
sure FF weapons are cute and look like crazy swords, but nothing beats a plasma sword to grab the attention of a monster

"No, Fighter..just..just no."

"It won't be one of those three-toed FREAK sloths, will it? They are the things of nightmares."
