The Hero6 Project / Offtopic Mayhem / Re: QFG collection : Does Sierra still sell them?

No need for an updated copy since all the games in the anthology work 100% on DosBox.
I myself went so far as to buy the strategy guide: I liked the stories and hints from the Companions for Kings Quest/Space Quest/Police Quest/Leisure Suit Larry, and the Quest for Glory one looked good, even though it was by a different author. Shame about the lack of points-lists (especially for number III, CURSE YOU 298 SCORE PALADIN) and other gameplay-related info, but the stories are pretty cool; it even handles the different class versions decently.

Nice to hear that it won't go down, Coco. I actually thought it HAD gone down back in March when I got a consistent 404 error for a week straight, which is why I stopped coming for a while. On a whim, I decided to look...and suddenly find the boards semi-active again in my absence.
...maybe if I leave for another year, when I come back, the game will be finished?

A Celtic theme...?
Well, then, if we're going up to the British Isles (how about Morimer as a name?), I think Holy Grail (both Python and Legend) and Robbin Hood (In Tights and Legend) references will go through the roof. For interesting source material, it would be cool for the story-boarders/artists to play through Conquest of Camelot and Conquest of the Longbow (both old Sierra games) for inspiration: they both seem to have VERY authentic and Druidic-styled takes on the legends in question, and it would be a nice tribute if some of the material came from another Sierra classic.
If Robbin Hood is used, it would be cool if "King Richard" turned out to be a Liontaur...;-)
Also - and I know this kind of goes against the Coles' game styles as it can put too much of a damper on the humor - perhaps it would be interesting to have the land war-torn and ravaged. Most towns (with the exception of the capital the Hero would use as a "base") would be partially or totally destroyed, with most people just trying to survive, while battlefields would mark the "wilderness" for the random encounters. The Boarders on the map would be a combination of water and mountains on three sides, with the "North" being a large battle: if The Hero approaches without proper equipment/skills/knowledge/reason (plenty of warnings from the townsfolk and the screen before will show the battle in the distance, of course), he will be "killed in battle" as soon as he arrives.
...wish I knew how to properly code/draw so that I could actually make these things a reality, but I wasn't blessed with the abilities.

*gasp* New blood?! My goodness, I thought I was the only one left!
A "tips" jar does sound good. Hero6 is the original fan-based sequal project, and arguably one of the fore-fathers of the indie-game movement. It would be a shame, if for no other reason then pure stubbornness, that this game never saw completion.
On the managerial side, many innovations have been created on other fan-sites that Hero6 could take advantage of to help bring the game to completion.
The only real problem right now is finding some staff who are willing to
a) devote 1-2 dedicated hours a day/week toward development IN SPITE OF 10+ hour jobs, family and other obligations; essentially, it's like working out: if you block out the time, you won't be tempted to put it off and are less likely to not do it due to "no time this week". b) work on the project in spite of the possibility of little to no payback (other then the intangibles of good experience and joy of creativity). Now that the economy is in the toilet, it will be a lot harder to find someone who is willing to do this voluntarily, when they could be doing other things like earning more money for emergencies/retirement or looking for a job. c) provide real skills to the project. As wonderful and crucial as fan fervor and passion are, they are crippled without the competence to do the job needed. I suspect no small part of the significant delays over the years have been from having to debug and recreate messed up code/art/music/etc from well-meaning but inept rookies. True, it will be impossible for EVERYONE to be a Guru Master with 20+ years experience in their field, but we need to make sure that more then JUST the Head/Senior members are competent with their skills. d) rustle up enough patience to see the project through for 2-4 years straight, possibly as many as 6 depending on the problems that arise.
As everyone can imagine, it's a significant problem to be overcome. I, myself, am a junior-level DBA with knowledge of SQL, SQR, some months experience in Java and (VERY little) C++, as well as some other miscellaneous languages, but I've never tried joining after my first time joining (several years ago) after realizing the requirements above.
So, how do we attract AND keep such people?

Unfortunately, it looks like we'll know if this game is done for by July of this year: the domain-name is set to expire then. So if nobody is continuing to work on this game, then the site will cease to be.
It would be nice if, before the domain is taken offline, someone from development would at least come in and let it be known officially that the game is over or not. That way, the hope and work of over a decade can at least be acknowledged in some small way.

OK, I know that I've said before that "too much showing off stuff is a bad thing", but the opposite is also true: we'd like at least a little bit of evidence that there's work being done.
Maybe not a demo or anything, but just an official post from the developers would be nice.

Believe me, I understand. Every once in a blue moon, one of the old major posters gets on (out of pity for me and - I suspect - some sense of nostalgia) and posts a reply, but otherwise, it's just me.
I mostly want them to come back on, but a small part of me just wants the programmers/developers to at least post a notice saying whether the game will ever come out or not. After all it's been through, if it MUST end, I'd like it to be a clean end, not just a complete fizzle and drift like it seems like it's doing now.
Of course, I could be wrong, and it COULD just be that the programmers, artists, musicians, designers, etc, are just keeping completely quiet about everything now...

So far as I'm aware, it's still going on. I trust these people have come far enough that if it becomes impossible, they'll post a postmortem and then close the site after a week or two.
And who says the forum's dead?? I'm still here!
