The Hero6 Project / Hero6 Discussion / Re: It's kind of sad

Anything playable really makes the day, be it for the developers or the players themselves, it's always such a relief when you get your stuff ingame.
LOL, how about a nice game of Mancala? Honestly, the small demo that was out (a little over a year ago?) and the screenies of the town and whatnot were cool enough for me. But since then the project has been on the backburner for me 'til just recently and not by recent developments of the H6 team, but by outside influences. Granted I'd like to keep up with this site everyday like I have before, but I have to agree that from an outside perspective "A watched pot never boils."

Phattie, thanks for making me drool over those screenies. I know I haven't posted because I don't want to do the typical "peek in-peek out" post (which this may turn into). Granted you said you may phase that format of data out, but nevertheless its given me enough to respark an interest in giving you guys a pat on the back about getting stuff put together. Its amazing how the most random of cookies you throw at the kids will still make eyes twinkle. Yeah, actually I emailed Servant a couple of weeks ago for the purpose of seeing if there's any odds and ends tasks that an average joe can do for the team but I'm sure you know how the reply went. Anyhoo... As a visitor I know I don't have productive input, but I will say that you guys are still doing a splendid job regardless of the setbacks.

I'll try to make this rated "G". While we're at Pope-cats. I was using the facilities this morning after getting up for work and my cat walks in the bathroom. He stares at me, rubs his face on my leg, stares again.... And then the smell of a dirty litterbox hit me. And the dang cat walked away. My cat did a 'hit and run' on me today. Would your Pope-cat frown upon this?

The Hero6 Project / Offtopic Mayhem / Modern Adventure Games

*nod* Look at this.Or this. This game I've personally played and had a blast with the story.Just a couple of examples of the color out there for pure adventure. There's a few more around. I tend to choose by genre when I know I'm either not in the mood to take the sword and hack at baddies for hours. I also choose by genre when I'm in the mood to rule or conquer a civilization with a beer in my hand or climbing into a cockpit and whether or not you have weapons to fire or just flying around. Merit is one thing, but that's not what I'm getting at. I'm trying to get to the point of are there any pure adventure games that anyone might know of that has caught their attention, whether it be good or bad.

I have a general question about some of the newer pure adventure games out there. I've noticed that most of the threads on newer PC games have been focusing on RPGs (Oblivion, NWN, WoW, etc.). Has anyone been playing, or at least keeping up with games like The Longest Journey, the Myst series, or even the CSI games? I was reading up on Gamespot the other day about an upcoming sequel to The Longest Journey called Dreamfall. I took a look at some of the videos and it seems to be pretty promising. On one note, the last pure adventure game I played was Missing: Since January. This game is quite remarkable for the reason that it gives you a sense of actually trying to solve a real mystery. In the beginning, you give an email address to the game and during the course of the game, you get real emails sending you clues to decipher strange puzzles on a strange CD-ROM that the kidnapper sent to investigators. Its one of those games you don't want to play in the middle of the night or else you'll be checking under the bed before calling it a night. All in all, I'd probably call the game more of a puzzle game or even a "1st Person Adventure", like Myst, The Journeyman Project, or Mission Critical. But the focus of the game wasn't combat, but solving little riddles like you did in the lands of Glorianna. So, on that note, if any of you have been diving into these games lately, I'd like to hear about your experiences with them. I figure some of us would have a hint of whats going on since we are, or at least have been big adventure fans. If anything, I'm hoping this post will kick up some interest in the genre we reminisce from its "golden age" and look at whats going on today.

I personally am waiting for the first waves of feedback on this game. I played Morrowind religiously for 3 months, and then the editor for about another 3. I would like to buy it on the fly, but funds are tight and I just wanna make sure I'll be on this epic quest for a good amount of time.

My theory? Well, I think the generation I fall into who dug the adventure games during the genre's prime are out of their parents' house and have jobs. I don't have much time at all to play on the PC like I did back in the day. But then we could beat the dead horse and talk about how adventure games don't sell and that's why you don't see them too often. This results in a loss of general interest because people are forgetting about them. And then there's us.

I read 'A Game of Thrones' and it made LotR look both simplistic and clear. I enjoyed it, but it isn't a book for tender minds. I've had the first 3 books of that series for a couple years now and still haven't gotten around to reading them. I hear nothing but good things about them. Once I get done with school, I'll have to give 'em a go.

The way you have to walk into MUDs is to realize that they are basically computerized versions of pencil and paper RPGs, i.e. Dungeons and Dragons. The computer does the DMing for you. Dice rolls, descriptions, etc. What I like about MUDs are that they are fast and to the point. You can set up macros very easily and pretty much get to where you want to go almost instantly, given you don't run into any encounters on the way. Like Silverbolt, I like it for the imagination. I feel a bit more attached to a character in a book rather than a movie...so that falls over into MUDs. Another great feature of MUDs I really enjoy is the cartography side. I used to have a huge binder full of maps on graph paper with notes scribbled everywhere. MUDs seem to make you become more involved in your adventures. The graphical games nowadays does so much for you already. I think of it like doing math without a calculator as opposed to doing it WITH one. Calculators make math easy, but you miss the point of solving the problem.

There's just something about UO that makes people behave like human beings, is all. There's always gonna be the morons, and most people don't really roleplay, but for the most part everyone treats it like it's a real and true new world that they're in and their character behaves accordingly. Is it like that as of recently? Or are you saying it has always been like that? I think when UO used to be all PvP (well, you had huevos if you PKed in town) it was a different story. I probably ran into a PKer scheme like every week. This was around 2nd Age I think. I left and came back and there were players left and right with names like 10100100111, *$P@$$t|[, ........, etc. The l33tage was pretty commonplace. I left soon after. I haven't been back to UO, but if what you're saying is true, I just may give it another go because I loved the game itself. I say all this but I do recall quite a number of really nice people who are extremely social and willing to go out of their way to give you a hand. By the way.....earlier I said the poop as in MUDs are "THE poop". And I always say poop instead of the s-word with or without censors.
