Title: Buying a house
Post by: Silverbolt on June 02, 2005, 05:52:58 PM
If this idea has already been stated, I deeply appologise.

What if instead of staying at the inn you could, at one point, buy a house? You have a chest, a bed, a cozy fireplace, maybe a weapon rack, a training hall (with...dummies or something), a room for trophies...ok, now I'm just rambling.

Let's leave it at "a house".

EDIT: Oh...damn. I should have posted this in Game Developement...stupid Silv! Stupid!

Cool idea, but no idea on how long it would take to implement.

I wouldn't think that it would be horribly long. it's only a purchase option, after all.

I suggest having a room for a collection of all the heads/headless corpses of the monsters you have slain!

I doubt the Hero can tolerate the smell of decay.

So stake em in the backyard.

Then people would question his "Hero" status.

hmmm... couldnt the hero get his trophies stuffed?  (Think Adventurers Hall in Spielburg) I would love to have the head of some huge troll on my wall  :D

I have an idea! An undeground base in the center of the earth where the hero has several UFOs and performs autopsies on aliens and has sharks with lasers on their heads!

No?

Okay then...

No, that's UnderQuest for Glory. And then there's SpaceQuest for Glory.

Roger Wilco, Space Janitor as...the Prince of Derrier!!

As for the house: I like, but I think there should be more to it...like maybe have some more optional quests to help make it better. And, to help the Hero become more powerfull.

After all, Remember that useless mansion you bought in FFVII? Where was the fun in that besides waiting money? There's got to be something else there...

That might work. People you rescue.

Or, just have stuff you find go to your house...

All of it being optional.

Buying a house? It would be more interesting to own something like a small castle or mansion. Maybe we don't actually own such a structure, but it's entrusted to us by someone.

Title: Buying a house
Post by: Paladin0707077 on June 06, 2005, 07:29:57 AM
Yeah...yeah, I like that.

Heck, we could even have an easter egg in there, where we find several "treasures" which are used to help pay for the house, while making a crack about how they're useless for anything else...

In Castlevania:Harmony of Dissonance (and perhaps other Castlevania games) you could collect furniture from around the castle, and them place it in a certain room for no reason (although I think you get something if you get all the furniture, but I never beat the game)

Castlevania is one of my fave side scrollers.  I've won that game.  I believe you had to collect all the furniture to win(?)  I don't remember exactly.

Fable allows you to buy your own house.  You can even rent it out and make money.  It's a good idea I think.

Oh ya, I forgot about the Fable houses.

Although I haven't played Ultima.

How about Daggerfall? Anyone played that? It is Edler Scrolls II
I don't remember exactly, but I think you could buy houses (from the Bank of Daggerfall)

I played daggerfall, but I don't think I played for very long....  I don't remember buying houses.

anyway, the problem with buying houses is that it gives the sense of permanancy.  I prefer the wandering hero....

That may be all well and good for the Fighter class, probably the Mage class, unsure if a Paladin's honor would allow him to accept it, but what about from the Thief's perspective? A fighter being more honorable would definately either earn a house or if he had enough gold buy his own home. Quite possibly the same with the mage (or if the mage gains some spell knowlwdge of magically creating a house/cabin). In my own opinion, the thief should "acquire" his own house, 1- whether say breaking into a certain designated house, 2- breaking into a house, offing the original owner, and making up some excuse that he/she moved (if asked), 3- possibly "attaining" the deed for said designated house (from say the sheriff's office or something), 4- or breaking into some abandoned house, whether in a city or a random lone house in the country (if there will be such things). I'm not sure if the house option will be implemented or not, but just some extra suggestions in the possibility of it happening and not taking too much time of the developers and whatnot. Looking forward to the game! Have a good day, evening night, whatever it is, whereever you may be.

Ok, granted the wandering hero does have quite an appeal to it and I know I'm more then likely getting ahead of myself, but what about after all the adventuring is over?  Does the hero wander forever or eventually settledown?  If settling down does comes to terms, then it may just be nice to already have a place to go to instead of having to find a place later.  Then again after all that adventuring, one may already have acquired more then enough wealth to take care of the necessary things.

I suppose so.  But think of this:

If the hero starts his hero business young, he's living with his parents.  In this case he's too young for my interest.  I mean what type of hero starts his career from his parent's basement?

I've just always assumed that the hero had a house *before* getting suckered into the whole mess.

That, or he got into the military, and branched from there.  But honestly, it depends on the setting.  Unless the hero is interested in living in some lonely cottage in the forest, most towns are too smooshed together to make buying a house a feasibility.  Look at Europe as an example:  most people who own shops, live above them.  For everyone else, they live in an apartment somewhere.

Besides, the hero would have to save his money and other stuff that most heroes aren't concerned with.  If you're in Mordavia, and getting hit by the cold, windy weather, you ain't gonna be too concerned about lugging around a lot of money so you can put it in the bank and buy a house some time.  Right?  I mean, Mordavia doesn't have a bank, and your money pouch can't hold enough...

I dunno, maybe you would want to buy a house.  But I think for me, a house leads to marriage.  Marriage leads to kids.  Kids lead to old age.  I don't like thinking about that type of stuff as I'm running around killing monsters and wooing mistresses.  I'd rather die in a blaze of glory.

Title: Buying a house
Post by: The Guy on November 19, 2005, 02:33:34 AM
Well, of course, he would have to had some residence earlier in his life.  Unless for a hero he was homeless?  But I don't think that's the case, for how often does one hear of the Homeless Hero?  And as for say, a cabin, it doesn't mean he will live there but be a place to rest, train, and use for storage as Silverbolt suggested when he had started the thread.  It does not mean mean it has to be a grand house, mansion, castle, what have you, more of a stopover is what I suppose I am getting at.  If you were closer to the house/cabin then near a city, you could rest there, drop off things to lighten your load, a fighter could train on a dummy, a thief could have a target to use for throwing daggers, perhaps a chest or door of some sort to practice lockpicking, and a mage could use it to study and learn spells.  I don't really think this is going to happen, but it could always be a thought for future use.  And as for marriage??  No, I don't see a house just for marriage, but hey if it came to that wouldn't you like to have a young hero in training and then go out in a blaze of glory? hehe

But you're generally a newcomer to said Valley/Desert/Jungle/Island. So you wouldn't have a house. Maybe you could get a tent. Or a yurt.

Title: Buying a house
Post by: The Guy on November 20, 2005, 09:37:33 AM
Well that is granted, but all my ideas were based on the possibility of buying and/or earning a house or cabin or something along the lines of that.  To be carrying around a tent or yurt would be unnecessary baggage depending on just how much said items may weigh.  I just put them in if they were to ever be considered whether in the upcoming game or maybe in a future release.

The possibility of buying a house is definitely something to consider for, er, Hero9. Until then, I doubt that our hero can be tied down so easily. The whole "finding a safe place to rest" conundrum was, I think, a nice touch in the QFG games, and so our hero will remain a vagabond for some time.

This is not, of course, an Official Answer. Official Answers are not really possible for anything past Hero6. That said, investing in real estate in Albion will probably not be a good idea until somebody makes it a little safer.

It's the hero's eternal dilemma. You can't settle down nicely until you've made the country safe, but once you've made the country safe, you're out of work. Oh, the pathos!

Who said anything about being tied down so easily just by buying a house? (Oh wait, PHattiE did) It's not like you would suddenly buy a house, settle down right there, and start sprucing up the place. Doesn't even have to be a house, could be a small one room hut or cabin or something. If something like that were the case, nobody says that your place of residence would be safe from rogues and such, whether you earned that residence honestly or by misdeed (think thief now). And if such a thing like that were possible, then a new option could be added to each character class! Depending on certain day(s) or night(s), while out on a quest or resting even, you could put money or whatever into a chest and then lock it. I suppose the Fighter could use a giant lock. The Mage could use a spell to lock and trap it. The Thief could set some kind of devious poison lock/trap. I mean, why should the Hero be invunerable to thievery regardless of class chosen? You end up returning from a quest to rest before moving on to what's next (or awake from resting) and find your house/hut/cabin/something broken into and robbed! How often in the QFG series did one have their items stolen? In the first 4 games, not to my recollection. Since I never completed QFG5, I can't rightfully say. Something like this could somewhat add to the game, maybe by just adding a sidequest in the hunt for your possessions or adding to the storyline itself.

It would appear the Homeless Hero seems to be the case after all.

And Silverbolt, I still think it's a good idea.

Considering the massive fortunes you made in 1-4, you'd think you could at least afford a decent inn room with maybe so little as a nightstand and a chest. Yet the only time you had a chest was when you were sleeping in a wooden hut with an animal skin bed. I mean, you got a bed and a window in most of them, and that was it. The people of Glorianna were pretty cheap when it came to the inns. I wouldn't have paid a silver to stay in the Hero's Tale Inn, but they charged FIVE. Cats.

Well, you DID have a chest in the Tarna inn. And the Mordavia one, in addition to the Simbani hut.

That's such a logical response from you, Silverbolt. Aside from that, if you put the Will O' the Wisps in the chest, wouldn't they be gone when morning would come? Or because the chest is closed, and most likely dark, they survive in there? I never tried that in my game.

A fighter :fighter: could takeover the house of a villain he killed :blackguard: ,
a paladin :paladin: could get invited to stay at a rich guys :royal: winter home while taking care of things for him,
a wizard :wizard: could make home in a magically hidden chamber in a temple
a thief :thief: could either "borrow" someones home while he is away or charm a woman into letting him stay with her  .

That would take care of the ownership issue - since most heroes don't really want to settle down anytime soon - home-ownership isn't really them :hero: .
Also, that would save the hero a lot of money and instead of another "thing to buy" the house would become the award for completing a sub-plot mission.

Why not have a quest attached to a house? Perhaps it's a haunted house that's abandoned in the corner of town.... You receive the deed from the local authorities and head inside. Maybe it's filled with ghosts, and you have to 'clean it out' (for Oblivion fans [and I know there are some on this board] think of the Anvil house)

I also thought of this, but it may be too class-specific: You head into the house, which is covered in cobwebs and dust. You head into the basement cause you see a light coming from there. You head down and find the Thieve's Guild! The Guild has been spreading rumors about the 'haunted' house to keep normal civillians away from it. (This would actually be kinda cool if you stole the deed and keys from the Sheriff's office, or just picked the lock yourself)
