Post by: Lord_Bierhoff on January 12, 2005, 10:26:25 PM
does anyone have any ideas for possible quests/side quests/ challenges for the hero to overcome?

I'd love to see the inclusion of folk tale characters similar to baba yaga and based on their alignment our hero would either have to help them out in some way, or make them flee the area  ^_^

Baba Yaga needs to make an appearence. She's like an old friend that we haven't seen in a long time. :D

If it's an asian setting (more towards ancient China), it'll be cool to have the hero meet the dirty mad monk called Ji Gong (http://www.dragon-gate.com/shopping/product/productDetail.asp?sku=DT010&id=311&cid=26) in order to get the cure from him (in the form of rolled up body dirt). :P Or perhaps have him meet Mdm White Snake (http://ccbs.ntu.edu.tw/FULLTEXT/JR-EPT/wha.htm) and either kill her or help her, depending on which version the team plans to use. Or hunt down Chiang-Shih (http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Dojo/8789/lam/vampinfo.html).

I'll find more myths and legends stuff later.

Cool ideas, Swift. B)

Ok, digging up all these mythology stuff reminded me of a story on tv I saw as a child. It's a bit hazy but I think a rich man became pregnant for insulting Ji Gong. He had no other choice but to beg the monk to reverse the effects, and Ji Gong rubbed himself all over until he had rolled up his body dirt in the size of a huge ball and gave it to the man to swallow. It worked.

That, for instance, could make an interesting side quest for our Hero. Changing a few things here and there, we could have that pregnant rich man or his parents ask the Hero to plead with Ji Gong on his behalf to reverse the effects for a reward. After talking to Ji Gong, the monk probably send the Hero on an errand or two to help the townsfolk with their troubles first before rewarding him with the "cure" and perhaps other divine help too, since he is suppose to be some holy being. Alternatively, if norse mythology was used instead, change Ji Gong to Loki the god of Mischief or a playful being and it could still work, except the Hero's approach could be varied.

Other possible sidequests I can think of for the asian setting is having the Hero to challenge and defeat one of the many champions of the Jade Palace (that's Heaven for the uninitiated) in order to win their favour, like Na Zha the fire boy who looks and sounds like a girl, travel to the Ten Courts of Hell with Horse-head guard and Cow-head guard to either bargain with the Hell judge (no idea what the proper name is yet) for one of the tortured souls to be set free, or speak to the dead about an unsolved murder, or perhaps visit that underwater kingdom to ask the dragon princes what's riling them (and the seas) up on behalf of the fishermen.

I'm interested in hearing what others have to say as well. What sort of folktale or myth based sidequests would you like to see in Hero7 or later?  It can be on any culture you're interested in.

Found an interesting website (http://www.pantheon.org/areas/mythology/) that offers a somewhat comprehensive guide to mythology, folklore and others, though it's incomplete.

I remember an old story about dreams that might make a fun little sidequest.
A man who recently lost pretty much all of his inheirited money had a dream about treasure in another city. So he travels to that city, and things don't go to well for him. He was picked up by the authorities, and was questioned by the Warden. When he told the Warden about his dream, the W told him not to listen to foolish dreams and talked about a dream he had. In the Wardens dream, a voice spoke of riches hidden in the Mans own home under a tree! The Warden lent him some money to get home, then the man rushed to his tree and dug there, finding tons of money that he spent wisely.

It would be cool if this story is adaped into a little sidequest, doncha think? ;)

That's an interesting story, but I'm not very sure how that tale can be modified into a sidequest. Care to elaborate please?

Title: Riddle me this, riddle me that
Post by: Jafar on January 17, 2005, 07:30:55 AM
Sure. Okay...:
The Hero meets a man who tells him about a dream he had.
About how you go to this place and do something there to find a treasure.
When you get there and do the thing, (Digging? Shaking a tree? Dancing? :P )another man asks about what the Hero is doing...
After the Hero explains, the 2nd man talks about a dream HE had that has to do with a treasure hidden in/near the first mans home.
Hero goes back, follows the instructions of the other mans dream, and gets rewarded. How's that? ^_^

That could work. :) Thanks.

Anymore sidequests suggestions, anyone?

I've been thinking, and, perhaps one of the close allies or something of the hero could be like a demon or a hag or something, and you have to investigate a series of bizarre murders involving devoured children and grown men and women, hung with their own arteries, and eventually follow the trail back to...Dun dun DUUUUUUUN!

Er, was that idea a little too disturbing?

Yeah, just a little too disturbing. OK, REALLY too disturbing.

Considering that this game is meant for people of all ages to play, yes, it's a bit too gruesome to use, but I suppose some modifications could be made if that idea were used.

Hey, that'd still be cool.

In Honor of Monty Python and the refrence to it in QG1, we could have a quest to seek the Holy Grail. That could be like the "Black Bird" from QG.

Title: Riddle me this, riddle me that
Post by: Swift on January 19, 2005, 06:00:09 AM
Sounds good, but what item do you have in mind? Perhaps we should use something else instead of the Black Bird in order to make that quest distinctive.

Title: Riddle me this, riddle me that
Post by: ndcent168 on January 19, 2005, 06:09:52 AM
I meant more along the lines of there being a FAKE Holy Grail that has some purpose...

Title: Riddle me this, riddle me that
Post by: Swift on January 19, 2005, 06:16:44 AM
Fake Holy Grail? Could you please elaborate? I'm not sure how that would fit the game. What story purpose would there be for going after a fake treasure?

Title: Riddle me this, riddle me that
Post by: Jafar on January 19, 2005, 06:19:36 AM
Maybe there were several fakes of the Grail made, and the Hero keeps running into them, then finally in Hero10, he disc- on second though, that wouldn't work.

Title: Riddle me this, riddle me that
Post by: ndcent168 on January 19, 2005, 06:20:42 AM
There doesn't have to really be any purpose to it. Just as the Black Bird really doesn't have any purpose in the games, it could just be a fun Easter Egg.

Title: Riddle me this, riddle me that
Post by: Swift on January 19, 2005, 06:24:06 AM
The thing about the Black Bird is that it had some story purpose in QG5. It was the prize that determined who would be the next Chief Thief.

The easter egg idea sounds cool though.

I wish that the Black Bird had an actual purpose in QFG4  :(

Where is the black bird in QG2?

Title: Riddle me this, riddle me that
Post by: Pwincess on January 20, 2005, 07:56:35 AM
Didn't the hero steal it then give it to that guy from QFG5?  (The guy from the parrot inn, however it turns out that the bird in QFG2 was a fake)

Title: Riddle me this, riddle me that
Post by: Corsair5 on January 20, 2005, 08:12:38 AM
No, you steal it from Khaveen, actually. It's a fake, though.

Title: Riddle me this, riddle me that
Post by: Swift on January 20, 2005, 08:48:07 AM
Ok, both of you seem to be talking about slightly different things here.

Pwincess is saying that the Hero stole the Black Bird, and then gave it to Ferrari, the owner of the Dead Parrot Inn.

Corsair5 is saying that the Hero stole it from Khaveen.

Both are correct.

Post by: Corsair5 on January 20, 2005, 07:52:09 PM
At the time, however, Ferrari isn't in Silmaria. He's currently in Rasier, at the Blue Parrot. I'm not sure if he was the owner or just a patron.

And where is the Blackbird in QFG4?

Oh, wait. It's in the basement of the Monastery, right?

look idea with the monk Swift, but I'm not so keen on using Loki that way.  It seems to me that Loki wouldn't help anyone unless he could cause more trouble by it.  Loki has always struck me as being something like the Devil with a sense of humour.  Coyote or Fox from the Native American myths on the other hand, might be get a chuckle out of making a man pregnant but would then be willing to help him.

lol, it's a memior from a sentence lost to the mists of time. perhapse if one replaced the 'oo' sound with a long 'i' sound it would make more sense

A man pregnant is disturbing. And why do YOU want to talk about cocks?

Talking cock is a harmelss local expression, meaning "to engage in idle banter".

And you were not warned for talking about sheep, ndcent. You were warned for insisting that you could smite anyone who disagreed with you in addition to accusing me of flaming you. I've already adjusted your warning level back to 0. You might want to bear that in mind the next time you post.

I did notice that, and thank you by the way.

I really need to make it more obvious when I am being sarcastic. When was the last time any of the rest of you used the word 'smite' in a conversation when you weren't role playing?

Title: Riddle me this, riddle me that
Post by: Corsair5 on January 28, 2005, 07:34:50 AM
When I'm joking, it's obvious. It's like...

SWIFT! FETCH ME A BEVERAGE OR I SHALL SUMMON AVOOZL!

Title: Riddle me this, riddle me that
Post by: ndcent168 on January 28, 2005, 07:59:40 AM
And everyone gets them, which makes them funnier too.

One question that you made me think of is this though: If Avoozl is summoned, isn't he going to kill the person who summoned him in addition to the rest of the world?

Title: Riddle me this, riddle me that
Post by: Corsair5 on January 28, 2005, 08:06:41 AM
Kadis is POSSESSED. Also, Katrina and Ad Avis didn't think that, did they? No. They thought it would bring about Eternal Darkness. Which is pretty true.

It would only really be dark cuz Avoozl ate you.

Not necessarily. Ad Avis probably wouldn't have been eaten if it weren't for the Hero.
