Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Jarrod on November 01, 2005, 08:57:53 PM
I was checking out Oblivion (since I am a huge Morrowind fan) (http://www.elderscrolls.com/games/oblivion_overview.htm) and it looks pretty incredible.  The AI looks to be pretty interactive (guards go hunting, Thieves will steal when the guards are away, there is a whole economic system going on in the background) and the graphics look intense.  Anyone else been eyeing the release of this game?  (Holidays 2005)

Eyeing it? I've been staring at it. Hungrily. Day, after day, after day. My only lament is that my compies probably won't be able to run it, and I don't think I have enough money to buy an XBOX 360.

Yeah...
This and Dark Messiah.

Dark Messiah? It sounds like the Antichrist.

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Jigen on November 02, 2005, 11:16:56 PM
Hmmmm, not really. The Antichrist isn't really saving or liberating anyone.

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Antichrist on November 02, 2005, 11:36:38 PM
That would depend on your view of 'christ', but thats besides the point...

Yeah, Oblivion looks frikkin awsome, Gonna run it on my comp (hopefully) when its released and start my mage/warrior's Journey (Dunmer)...

What race/class everybody gonna make?

Antichrist...why not just go all the way and call yourself Satan?

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Jigen on November 03, 2005, 12:35:53 PM
Because the antichrist isn't satan.

I have to admit Oblivion has had me drooling.  I've got a bit of a break after my exams, sooo perhaps if my desk top is up to the task (which I unfortunately suspect it's not) I may pick up a copy.

I was just looking around for some info on a few next-gen games, and I found this.

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/663/663056p1.html (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/663/663056p1.html)

No Oblivion 'til 2006.

Don't buy it, Reish. I don't trust anything said about games ESPECIALLY release dates unless it's on the official site.

Also, Jigen, yes, the Antichrist is Satan in physical form.

Where's it say that in the bible?

I'm going to say this right now - keep this discussion as civil as possible. We don't want any religious flaming here, or this topic will be locked.

Post by: Silverbolt on November 04, 2005, 03:53:53 PM
Heh...religious discussions. So amusing for an agnostic such as myself.

As for Oblivion...I WANT IT! And after that, I want Fallout 3 or I will flay Behtesda.

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Reish Vedaur on November 04, 2005, 05:11:20 PM
Fallout 3... I wish they would release a little more information on it.  All they've basically said so far is "We're making it our way and you fans of the series have no say."

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Silverbolt on November 04, 2005, 06:56:36 PM
I really really hope they don't rape Fallout 3.  :(

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Corsair5 on November 04, 2005, 07:04:15 PM
They will probably vape the Bird's Eye perspective on Fallout 3. My guess is that it'll become a lot like Morrowind, except with a greater emphasis on Ranged Combat. And there'll be guns.

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Jarrod on November 04, 2005, 08:42:37 PM
Well the official release date on the Oblivion site it Holidays 2005... so it will be soon.

Personally I have always liked Knight with healing magic and some offensive magic.  I modified the Knight in Morrowind to have more offensive and healing magic.

I am pretty excited though.  Probably a 128mb video card will be minimum so I might be upgrading... (When I got my current 128 mb video card I loved Morrowind so much more cause of the delay being gone)

Looks awesome though.

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Corsair5 on November 04, 2005, 11:28:03 PM
Well, I'm hoping I'll win an XBOX 360 or something, becuase otherwise I probably won't be playing Oblivion for a while.

Well, the system requirements are pretty crazy.

Post by: Captivus on November 05, 2005, 12:42:33 PM
Never liked morrowind - probbaly won't like oblivion.
For me it's just a very big, very complex and very pretty tamagochi game. Building up stats etc.
Besides I don't like when every people I ask about for example boat answers EXACLY the same :(

But hey it's just my oppinion :)

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Lord_Bierhoff on November 05, 2005, 02:20:21 PM
I like the big world, but that's a matter of personal preferance.  I also found the ununiqueness of alot of th NPC's iritating so I stopped talking to people on the streets.  There are mods that improve the dialogue though.  It looks like they are taking some of the mod communities improvements to the game into consideration when they design Oblivion, so hopefully they will work with this criticism of Morrowind.

Quote progect leader dude for Oblivion and Fallout 3:

"Fallout 3 will NOT be Morrowind with weapons."

But I never trust people.

If they DO rape Fallout 3, however, I'll never forgive them.

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Corsair5 on November 06, 2005, 05:10:31 AM
Well, that was Morrowind. Radiant AI is gonna change a lot. Also, every line of dialogue is voice-acted, and I doubt that they'll just have the same lines over and over.

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Lord_Bierhoff on November 06, 2005, 05:16:28 AM
I hope not.  That'll get very iritating.
hummm.... I wonder how the moders will add dialogue.  Use their own voices?  that could get messy.

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Corsair5 on November 06, 2005, 05:34:53 AM
Probably won't for most of them, they'll just have to rely on the text. Maybe there'll be a voice synthesizer.

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Reish Vedaur on November 06, 2005, 06:36:58 AM
That's gonna be a lot of hard drive space.  Call of Duty 2 is what.. 4 or 5 CD's? And the content isn't even that great, nor does it show any reason for taking up so much room...  But I wouldn't be surprised if Oblivion matched or surpassed that.

Oh, GOD NO!

Get Microsoft Sam to read some words and then reconsider that!

If they do as well a job with voice acting as JoWood did with Gothic and as Bioware did in KotOR, I'll be satisfied.

Hmm... I know the voice acting for Gothic 2 was not that great, really (at least, for the English version, since it is a German game).

Well, KotoR was easy. 50% of the NPCs were aliens and talked in gibberish.

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Captivus on November 06, 2005, 10:22:24 PM
I wouldn't say 50% but it was easier yes ....

But why not use it with Oblivion? Not ALL races need to speak the same language ...

Title: Oblivion?

Actually, they do, mostly. Remember Morrowind? They all speak Aldmeris. And you're in the capital, so...

As for

Oblivion won't be nearly as good if they take out S'wit and N'wah.

But, yeah, everyone in Cyrodiil would probably speak...Imperial? Cyrodiilic?

Title: Oblivion?

So what is N'Wah and S'Wit?

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Striker on November 09, 2005, 08:10:19 PM
n'wah = "Foreigner" or "Slave" - An insult/taunt.
S'wit = generic insult... kind of like dumbass or jerkoff

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Silverbolt on November 09, 2005, 09:55:33 PM
The best match for "n'wah" would be "Outlander". Not an insult in its original form, but used as an insult by many.

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Lord_Bierhoff on November 10, 2005, 06:12:56 PM
but it seems to me that n'wah and s'wit are just phrases from the Dunmer language and not part of Aldmeris, although I'd imagine there are similarities between the languages as they all are evlen (mer) in origin.

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Striker on November 10, 2005, 06:36:21 PM
Yup, they're dunmer phrases, but I think you'll probably hear 'fetcher' said a few times in Oblivion.

Ahhh Oblivion, I've been following it's progress for about a year now. I recently spent $1500 upgrading my computer just in preperation for Oblivion. I'm not kidding, I've been so excited about it I made sure I had a top-of the line comptuer so that I could max every performace setting on the game. Even bought surround sound speakers. Unforunately, now it looks like April before we can play. You see, they officially announced it was pushed back until their companies second quarter. The game is already done, but I guess during the first quarter, their profits have sucked. Releasing the game now would only bring their profits to slightly above average. It's better for them on paper and in the market to show a horrible quarter, followed by their best quarter ever. Their playing a financial game of thier own, and using Oblivion as the tool. They know it'll sell millions of copies, they are just sitting on it until it's best for them to release it. We'll have to be patient and play D&D Online until then.. (DDO should be out in a month or so I believe)

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Reish Vedaur on November 18, 2005, 03:55:39 AM
Not too sure DDO is gonna be worth it, having seen their foray into RTS.

EDIT: Well, maybe.  Gonna have to get some in-game footage.

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Lord_Bierhoff on November 18, 2005, 05:39:11 AM
As a student April looks like a better date.  I know I'm not going to have the time for the game until around then.

Post by: Erasmus on November 18, 2005, 06:59:17 PM
As a student I was going to fail school. :) Oblivion was originally set to release the day my finals start this semester. I would have flunked all my tests. Still wish I had it sooner though.

Also, DDO wasn't made by the same people who tried to do the RTS's. It looks like they did a good job.

I got that newsletter too.
The thing that impressed me the most was actually the way they have gotten the alpha-channel (selective transparency) textures to draw properly even at a very far distance.  Look at the first screenshot of the boats with the rope riggings and rope ladders out in the distance.  Then look at the fences in this screenshot from Call of Duty: http://honorguard.uberclan.com/reish/proje..._treatment5.jpg (http://honorguard.uberclan.com/reish/projects/scc_treatment5.jpg)

The graphics in these games are just getting more and more amazing! I thought Morrowind looked pretty good when it first came out, then looking at the Oblivion screens just blows Morrowind away. Hopefully all the time invested in the graphics doesn't take away from the story.

Post by: Guest_Dragon_Rider on January 19, 2006, 07:23:04 PM

Of course it would look like Morrowind.  It's an Elder Scrolls game, so all the races and character designs would be very similar from past games.  But if you've had one single look at elements inside the game, especially the combat system, you'd see how different it is.

Title: Oblivion?
Post by: Corsair5 on March 14, 2006, 05:15:29 AM
To repeat Reish, of course it looks like Morrowind, in much the same way that Half-Life 2 looked a lot like Half-Life, except with better graphics. Do you REALLY expect Bethesda Softworks to turn the Elder Scrolls from a Medieval-Style Fantasy to some kind of Sci-Fi FPS?
