Title: Free MMO's
Post by: Reish Vedaur on August 22, 2005, 01:36:31 PM
So my friend Andrea has been wanting to find and play a free MMORPG for awhile, so she went around searching and most of them have been pretty crap or cost money, but a few of them are mediocre/servicable or unique.

FlyFF (http://english.flyff.com/) (Fly For Fun) is just like any other 3D MMORPG, maybe a little prettier than some, but for the most part it's literally the same save for the flying -- if you can cut through the Engrish and get a handle on what they're trying to tell you.

MapleStory (http://www.mapleglobal.com/) is a unique, 2D platforming beat-em-up with RPG elements (more of a "build your stats and collect items" thing -- then again, what MMO isn't?).  It's cute and kinda hokey, but it's fun and not hard to get into.

Gunz (http://www.gunzonline.com/) is a third-person shooter (in other words, you're looking at your guy from the back) built with the Half-Life 1 engine, with a few Matrix-style moves and hand-to-hand combat as well as firearms, but the system is built more to appease the MMO fans than the FPS fans and it suffers from stubborn design; still, worth a try since it's in Open Beta and won't be free forever.

Like most asian games (most games in general, but particularly asian ones), these games are not in the least bit about teamplay.  It's all about your character and trying to look cool... within their guidelines.

Guild Wars (http://www.guildwars.com) - not free, but no monthly fees. And the game is great. Been playing since Friday.

I've been debating about that one.  I play WoW now and then.  I'm taking a big break from it cuz 1) I can't stay caught up with my guildies, 2)on my server, outside the guild, there's not much of a social aspect, and 3) I hate being labelled as a bandwagon jumper.  Even though I am.   :P

Anyways, to get back on subject....  if you could keep me posted on how that's going for ya (GuildWars that is), perhaps I might just buy it.   I hear its very Diablo-ish.

Been playing Guildwars for the past two months and absolutely love it!

P.S.  Basically a lot of people who were involved with the development of Diablo were also involved with the making of Guildwars :P

Diablo is a good game and the online version is mad-fun, it just sucks because the community is full of mean-spirited people and retards. No matter how good an online game is, a bad community will completely ruin it.

That's why I play Meridian 59 (http://meridian59.neardeathstudios.com/). It suffers from the exact opposite problem. It's a sub-standard game, but its full of really cool people. ;P

(It's not free, though.)

Too bad 'The Realm' isn't free nowadays.  I jump back and forth on the game.
Now talk about an MMO that had some trials and tribulations.

You absolutely MUST give me your character name so I can add you to my friends list so we can kill stuff together!

As for how Guild Wars is, well, it's not a MMO per se. I mean, you have your towns and safe areas where there are a lot of players, but once you form a party and go adventuring, you get a separate copy of the adventure map. Just you, your party and a load of beasts to kill, so everyone can complete the main quest separately. Anyway, the real attraction, I hear is the PvP system, or should I say GvG. I'm in the process of assembling a guild myself.

Oh, okay.  So the whole world except the towns are like instances?
One of my guildies friends (a friend of a friend of a friend  :D ) was supposed to get back in touch with us on how he was doing on GW.  No news is good news I guess.

He either can't stop playing or a giant monster has ingested his brains.

Or both. The giant monster might have ingested the computer as well.

Meh, Diablo 2 was boring both as a Multiplayer and a Single Player game.  The first one was a passable single player game though.

Thank ye. I look forward to our meeting.

As long as we're not battling eachother in the Arena.

...

On second thought, that would be really cool.  :paladin:

I just got NWN Platinum last night.  However, I won't have internet at home 'til Thursday (we just moved).  Lemme know how I can find you guys and I'd be more than thrilled to adventure with you folks.

We totally owned the arena.

Rulic:  NWN's is totally addictive.  My bf and I played it non-stop for 3 years

I hate NWN. I love Forgotten Realms, I loved Baldur's Gate, and I played NWN like crazy, until my save game broke in the second part.

Then I started over after a year and it happened again.

I won't play that game ever again.

Heh, I had NWN (no expansions) back in 2003 I think.  I just got to my ship and bought a laptop so I can play in berthing.  NWN was one of the first games I bought and I enjoyed the bejeezuz out of it.  Unfortunately, I had no internet on the ship and I lent the game to a 'shipmate' (I say that in a negative way, and fellow sailors would understand what I mean) and never got it back.
I got to chapter 2 and was never able to continue.
I bought NWN platinum in hopes that I can get involved again.  I started with a wizard this time and I'm having a hard time getting use to the magic system.  When I was growing up, I wanted to play D&D but nobody around me played so I never had the chance.  Plus I grew up in the Bible Belt and D&D=Satan.
So yeah, learning the magic system of D&D is new to me.
If I can't get used to it by chapter 2 then I'll probably revert back to Fighter, or try ranger or rogue.  I'd hate to do it because I'm usually Wizard all the way in RPGs.

One of these days we should organise a NWN party, since a number of us have that game. I think that'll totally rawk.

I'll play as a useless Bard who sings while the party does ANYTHING.

I find that ironic.  ^_^

Actually, I find it quite fitting =P

I played D&D for the first time when I was either 3 or 4.  A fighter named Drake.  I never liked the D&D system but it was all I knew so I improvised.  When I got AD&D: Unlimited Adventures for the PC, I tried a ton of different little things to make my own RP.  That was fun.

Now I just make my own roleplaying systems, in freeform and numerical.  Mostly cuz I'm bored.

Same deal here, but I've always hated any D&D system (or just any pen-and-paper system with rigid character classes. I've been writing my system for more than five years now and am in the middle of revamping the mechanics (again).

Quick vote:  Who would be interested in playing Nordock (NWN's Module) with a Hero6 party?

We get our internet service back tonight (hopefully).  I would be more than willing to tag along if you can put up with a mega-noob.  Just let me know what I need to do to get started and where I can find the mod.

I'll set up the NWN's server, however everybody first needs to suggest a few possible times where everybody interested may attend...

What about this weekend (Saturday or Sunday Aust time)?

I am off both on Saturday and Sunday.  So anytime is good for me.

[edit]Well....my ISP was supposed to be here yesterday but they actually scheduled it to NEXT Thursday.  Comcast is the devil.

[and another edit]  Does anyone hear use Teamspeak?  My old guildies use to implement TS alot.  Great for, obviously, communication and just flat out fun.

If there is anyone playing Guild wars, why not meeting each other to have some fun?

I go by the eng-2 and be there in sundays(mostly). If anyone wishes to have a chat I go by the Arathed Menelmacar name.

By the way, Rulic I was raised with the same restrictions. Anything that was magic and fantasy was a satanic to tempt the weak(as my family believed).

Okay... we finally have internet back, we're done with our 'hurricane vacation', and I'm ready to roll on NWN.
If you ever get the chance, lemme know what I need to do to get started.
