Title: Fun with text parsers.
Post by: EvilSandwich on July 02, 2005, 03:44:05 AM
Ah, the text parser. Long before the mouse was used as the primary tool for the adventure gamer, we primitive cavemen had only the keyboard and our wits to guide us. Zork, King's Quest, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Leisure Suit Larry, Spellcasting 101... Looking back, the modern day point-and-clicker is just spoiled rotten.

Realizing this, YukaTakeuchiFan takes us down memory lane by replaying Quest for Glory 2 and forces us to watch his pathetic attempts to get the text parser to understand what he wants it to do.

Behold!

Quest for Glory2: Fun with Text Parsers! (http://yukatakeuchifan.kiwibonga.com/parser.html)

I have no clue whatsoever.  :glare:

I'll give you guys a hint.

It's from an adventure game from the mid-90's that was recently re-released.

Ok, let's think. What game had two cowboys in it? Bah, I'm out.

Um...Maniac Mansion Deluxe?

Title: Fun with text parsers.
Post by: Silverbolt on July 04, 2005, 06:15:38 PM
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait!

They actually did good adventure games in the mid-nineties?

Corsair, Maniac Mansion was made at the end of the eighties  :P

Title: Fun with text parsers.
Post by: Striker on July 04, 2005, 08:43:54 PM
Well, it's obviously one of those mid 90s FMV games... I don't know... one of those Zork games?

The bolded area is probably the most important clue.

@ Ignus_Draconus: Yeah, it did go off topic pretty fast. Though, my favorite part was "Threaten programmers with death." :D

I liked "Kick brigand in the nuts" and "Swear loudly"  :D

Did you know if you actually type in various vulgarities in QFG1 and 2, you get some rather amusing responses?

I have got to try that out. Thanks!

EDIT: Corsair...either you lied to me, or our definitions of "vulgarity" are WAAAAAAY different... <_<

Title: Fun with text parsers.
Post by: Kailkay on July 06, 2005, 07:04:28 PM
Try it in QFG1... You'll get responses like 'Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?' and 'Doesn't sound very hero-like to me'.

Anyways...

TEXT PARSERS ROCK... I am so ashamed that you would all not think so... If only someone had made a SCI version of qfg 3 and 4... it would be perf-- Wait, that's what I'll do.

I have some thinking to do.

one thing that makes parsers more fun than point-and-click

Title: Fun with text parsers.
Post by: Rosella on July 06, 2005, 10:02:17 PM
 lol! And this is what tempts me to go back to my text parser games and mess with them. And you've gotta love threatening the programmers with death. :P

Title: Fun with text parsers.
Post by: Kailkay on July 06, 2005, 10:43:03 PM
Well, let's see... Programmers = either monkeys or slaves chained to computerdesks, forced to write in a language nobody understands for the pleasure of the Boss, project leader, company owner, whatever. Threatening them with death would be like holding a lollipop just out of reach of a hungry child.

And... I scorn you, sir. The VGA remake is laughable at best, and barely compares to our purplepants crusader! (I mean, GREEN pants? Who wears that...? Honestly. No fashion sense at all.)

Title: Fun with text parsers.
Post by: Silverbolt on July 07, 2005, 05:36:34 AM
I wear gren pants!  :annoyed:

Ok, no I don't. I like black.  :D

Title: Fun with text parsers.
Post by: Jafar on July 07, 2005, 05:40:35 AM
I don't really care too much what color pants are, as long as they're not ugly and\or seizure inducing.

Title: Fun with text parsers.
Post by: Silverbolt on July 07, 2005, 05:44:57 AM
Like constantly changing color from bright red to bright blue in a matter that could be dangerous and may cause epilepsia? Who'd wear that?...apart from that one guy...

Title: Fun with text parsers.
Post by: Corsair5 on July 07, 2005, 06:15:15 AM
I sometimes where pants that occasionally send out razor-edged knives at various people. Except me.

Title: Fun with text parsers.
Post by: Ignus_Draconus on July 07, 2005, 04:19:01 PM
I guess you should be careful not to put them on inside out then.

and what's wrong with green pants. I usually wear green pants every tuesday evening. I also wore them for the three weeks that I was out of touch

Title: Fun with text parsers.
Post by: Kailkay on July 07, 2005, 06:25:04 PM

Title: Fun with text parsers.

Obviously, yellow, orange, and gray are the colors that go on pants. Together!

Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within and Bad Mojo were some of the few FMV games I liked.

Bad Mojo was recently re-released, you should give it a try. It's probably that only game I know that's both artful and beautful while at the sametime being gut-wretchingly gross (Not bloody-gross, more like "licking a subway floor"-gross ).

I'm a bit of a casual fan. ^_^
