http://geekpress.com/2006/05/some-savvy-teenagers-are-using-high.html

This technology, aka Mosquito, can only be heard by teenagers because adults lose the ability to hear high-frequency pitches.

I sure couldn't hear the second clip. But I could hear a faint buzzing in the first clip(sounds like a darn mosquito, all right!).

I couldn't hear the 2nd clip without turning up my speaker alot. I can't hear the buzzing in the 1st clip. Dammit I'm 21 and have taken good care of my hearing. annoyed

Interestingly enough, these teenagers are unintentionally being courteous by having a ringtone that doesn't disturb adults.

Sounds irritating. Can you imagine losing the ability to hear your ringtone suddenly?

I can hear them both fine.
On a related note, I can also hear the electronic high-pitch tones from computers and TV sets, so when I pass by a room that has a TV with no sound coming off it and no image on the screen, I can still tell it's on.

I don't hear them so much as 'feel' them, same as no-signal computer screens. Irritating after a while. I don't really remember 'hearing' computer screens any more clearly when I was younger though blink maybe the change is too gradual...

I'm actually extremely sensitive to high frequency sound and the same thing can be said about me. I remember once biking past a house and realizing that a TV was on inside even though I couldn't hear anything else. Both files here were loud and clear for me... especially the 2nd one... ow... *rubs ears*

I also noticed this doesn't have a lot to do with youth... I knew lots of kids who couldn't hear the same noises I could.

I can hear both of them, and I have the same thing that Striker talked about. (I'm 18)

I can tell when a TV is running even if I'm not in the room. Sometimes, I even pick up an annoying one-second high pitch signal from it too.

Yeah, actually many times I can hear sounds from the tv in the neighbour's apartment(just next to mine) and often, even what they're speaking on the programme too!

Not sounds from the TV, I mean, the actual high frequency signal that a TV emmits, no matter what the volume.
