If we were to have hero7 in a forest area, what monsters should our hero encounter during the day/night?

Title: Monsters
Post by: ndcent168 on January 14, 2005, 08:40:43 PM
As mentioned in a different thread, rouge gargoyles could come out at night.

Post by: Swift on January 15, 2005, 01:58:15 AM
Aren't gargoyles more likely to be found in buildings, or at least near it?

Just at the top of my head, giant snakes and spiders perhaps?

I know that there are quite a few in Paris on buildings

How about raiding Goblin groups? Not like the ones in QfG1, these guys would be armored and fully trained, and a reasonably tough opponent, equal in caliber to like one of the Brigands of QfG1.

I love the idea!

People will probably encounter them thinking that they are wee little goblins and get the shock of their life!   ^_^

You could have 'demons' in the form of animals and creepy things. They're somewhat humanoid but will revert to their true form when killed. Examples include White Bone Spirit, Fox demon, Spider Demon, Centipide Demon, Elephant demon, Lion Demon, Tiger Demon, Pig Demon, etc...

If you want to be silly, you could always have 'demons' in the form of fruits and musical instruments... I've seen Chinese mythology drama shows having Pineapple Demons and Pipah Demons (Pipah is the name of an oriental instrument).

I love it!

If the combat is set up in a manor that give an advantage to the groups, the Goblin Raiders would be great.

That would be a great Easter Egg to have in the game: have the occasional demon turn into a pineapple. LOL.

Fresh pineapple or the canned stuff?  ^_^

Yeah, the difference would be that the Goblin Raiders would have full Goblin Armor. (Having the same style as the LotR Uruk-Hai would be awesome.)

Fresh Pineapple! And if we really want to be funny, we should give the Hero the option to pick up that Pineapple corpse and eat it.

I could just see it now! Have a character in the game that owns a Monster Pineapple Farm! Maybe that farmer could challenge the Hero to kill all the Pineapple demons and the Pineapple King, then offer the dead Pineapple King as proof that he's succeeded in the task in order to receive a reward! :P (Yes, I got the idea from playing with Pwincess in NWN's Nordock)

Post by: Lord_Bierhoff on January 21, 2005, 03:00:50 PM
lol, I'm loving that idea guys.

I was bumming around mythica and found this guy and thought he sounded like a cool quest monster.

Djien
A monster spider the size of a man whose is heart is buried in the ground causing it to survive the most critical attacks. Slain by Othegwenhda, Flint, when a tree limb is stabbed into the earth to pierce Djien's heart.

and here's a few neat random encounters

Fire Dogs
Small with pointed ears, they are always seen or encountered in mated pairs traversing North and South paths, never easterly-westerly. They are seen most frequently at the headwaters of streams and creeks.

Stonecoats
Stonecoats [Seneca] and Witiko are North Eastern Woodland cannibals.

Sta-au
In Blackfoot myth, the ghosts of wicked people. Usually, the deceased live in a certain range of hills, but malignant spirts loiter near encampments. They cause harm to the living, especially after sunset.

Ulala
A mythical man-eating ogress in the tales of the Haida.

Wendigo
The Wendigo is a monster who comes from the coldest place. He is composed of mud and ice. A cannibal, he will devour anything in his path, including another Wendigo. His mouth is lined with jagged teeth and he is magic, able to change form at will. One warrior defeated a Wendigo by changing himself into a giant dog.

(In the northern part of Canada missing persons have been considered victims of the Wendigo and have been reported so in newspapers. There is also a psychological condition peculiar to the Algonquin people called "Wendigo Psycholsis" in which the victim begins to crave human flesh. This condition has been used in courts of law as part of the defense of a person )

Wishpoosh
The beaver monster who drowned fishermen. From his body, Coyote made the Native Americans of the Northwest Coast.

Yeitso
A fearsome man-eating giant in Navajo myth. He is one of the monstrous anaye

Delgeth
a flesh-eating antilope. [also one of the anaye]

What do you guys think of having a Pontianak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontianak) as a monster for Hero7?

Title: Monsters
Post by: Paladin0707077 on January 27, 2005, 05:58:42 PM
Great idea for a quest monster:

Have the Pontianak appear as an "unbeatable" monster. You can beat it, but you don't get full points (think of the Spieldburg Ambush canyon in HQ1. There is a better way...). Then have a nail-like object (stake, railroad spike, empty quill pen...) somewhere and a reference to Pontianaks in a book somewhere. They can use the Pontianak to change the monster into a woman, and then proceed. Paladins could save her (duh), and wizards could learn magic from her. Fighters could even fight her for practice afterward. Thieves...don't know. Ideas?

Thieves could hit on her.

Could we have a monster similar to the cat featured in the old lady's house (HQ/QFG1) or to Puss in Boots (Shrek II)?  It would be amusing to meet an innocent puddy-tat which is a hero slayer  :winktongue:

Title: Monsters
Post by: Corsair5 on January 29, 2005, 12:18:25 AM
A Shape-Shifter would be cool. Somebody who is just, you know, having a pint at the tavern or standing around, and if you talk to him, he's like..

"Ah, I've been waiting for you. I have a gift for you!" and then he morphs into like a Demon or something nifty like that.

Random monsters, I think.

Maybe we could do a twist on spiritshadows, creatures bound in an alternate world and reduced to a kind of physical shadow that can only be harmed by light, or be destroyed by trapping it in complete darkness

Title: Monsters
Post by: Ignus_Draconus on January 31, 2005, 11:10:28 PM
spiritshadows were creatures in the seventh tower series. they'rer creatures bound by magic in an alternate worrld to obey a master, then taken into the  other world, a process that reduced them to living shadows. while they're shadows,  they can't be hurt  except by light-emmiting weapons, light magic, etc. also, since all shadows require light to exist, the creatures can be starved by imprisonment in total darkness.

Title: Monsters
Post by: Corsair5 on January 31, 2005, 11:21:17 PM
So you could kill them with a torch. Nifty.

Title: Monsters
Post by: Swift on February 01, 2005, 02:25:21 AM
Ignus, what can these shadow creatures do then, if they can't hurt others?

Title: Monsters
Post by: Swift on February 01, 2005, 03:04:23 AM
Argh, I misread. Thanks for pointing that out, Corsair.

Anyway, what can these shadows do, Ignus?

Title: Monsters
Post by: Ignus_Draconus on February 03, 2005, 04:08:04 AM
well, they have a shadow of whatever powers that they possessed while they were ordinary (or not so ordinary) creatures. the lesser creatures that are bound  are weaker,  but  can take  on a  larger  variety  of  shapes,  as  they  are closer to  formless as shadows than  the  more  powerful creatures. on  the  other   hand, the  more  powerful creatures  are less malleable,  but  have potent abilities.  a  giant wasplike insect with a projectile  and acid sting  might become a shadow  able  to  shoot a corrosive dart, or a carnivorous carpet of grass might stay  basically the same. I  should  probably note that  the shadows  are  very much tangible, and  that  physical  damage  will  hurt  them,  though  will not  be  able  to  seriously  injure them.

Honestly though, I think it would make more sense to you if you read the books. Seventh tower series,  by Garth Nix.

Title: Monsters
Post by: Corsair5 on February 03, 2005, 09:50:05 PM
It seems to me that putting them in Darkness would simply make them formless. Gaseous. They'd be unharmable and untouchable, but at the same time, they have no form to do anything.

Title: Monsters
Post by: Ignus_Draconus on February 03, 2005, 11:15:54 PM
Think of  them as solar powered. the shadows derive all strength and  sustenance from whatever light source is availiable. without light, they end  up  like a  goldfish that hasn't been fed for a week.

Title: Monsters
Post by: Corsair5 on February 04, 2005, 12:38:13 AM
But then why does Light-emitting weaponry, like Torches, harm them?

Title: Monsters
Post by: Ignus_Draconus on February 05, 2005, 05:53:54 AM
I'm not  sure torches  would. I think  it's how focused the light is. honnestly I can't rreally claim to know all the logic behind them, I didn't crreate the idea.

Sorry about the double post, but I have an idea for a monster.

Uruloki, or Fire Drakes. Little dragons, like the ones you occasionally encounter in QfG5. Maybe about as tough as a QfG1 Troll, or so, but they can attack from a distance with fire breath. Sure, the name isn't entirely original, nor is the monster, but it's still cool.

How about having Corrupt Dryads?

Basically, it's a special quest. Some dark force is perverting the Dryads of the woods into evil, and now they attack anyone and anything that comes near them. They'd be like the Wraiths in QFG4, monsters that attack only during the day and only in specific areas. If you just kill them, you get a butt ton of money, but fail the quest and get no points. If you find and cure them, though, you get some money, full points, and a special item (weapon, armor, spell, etc...)

Thieves would be ablet to steal more money from them after they've been cured (if they're good enough). Fighters can fight them in order to increase various skills quickly (allows people to max out skills somewhat quicker near end-game). Wizards could get magic-restoring herbs from them. And Paladins...would get lots of honor (and maybe some extra item for proving his valor to the quest-maker, like a medallion that protects from all poisons or some such).

Yay. :D

Anyway, as for monsters, as another monster, we could have a "Yellow Snatch" or some such. Hard to hit, but dies with one stroke.

I can always suggest my Deep Swamp Frog, but it has no basis in any story but my own...

Basically, it's a lower form of a lizardman (although obviously he's a reptile), with no weapons or armor nor the intelligence to weild them, but it stands upright with a barbed tail and chomping teeth.  But when you defeat it, you'll turn around and be all victorious, and it'll change into what I always coin as "stumpy," halfway between frog and lizardman, short and bouncy and likes to bop you with its head.  When you beat that, it reverts to a frog, but STILL hasn't been beaten.  Now it has a poisonous barbed tongue and hops around quickly but if you hit it it dies pretty much on the spot.

On a more serious note, how about a succubus?

They all tend to harp on the one thing, don't they? lol

Someone mentioned earlier about a more-organized, more-intelligent kind of faction of goblins.  Thank you for saying it, whoever it was, because I've been thinking of that for awhile too.

Anyway... there's always a plethora of creatures to choose from, especially if you go from a certain mythos.  Failing that, make something dead walk.  Failing that, make some of the flora and fauna walk.  Failing that, make something inanimate walk.  All been done?  Well...... yeah, pretty much, can't help you there lol.

But one thing I must make a plea for is technology.  With the inclusion of Dr. Brain from QfG4, it has been shown that perhaps this world has a bit more technology than previously believed.  Now, perhaps they do not quite match the intellect or (al)chemical know-how of Dr. Brain and others such as the apocetharies, but it would not be far-fetched to think that someone has a number of gadgets at their disposal, would it?

Thus I call to mind something else from the story I posted elsewhere on this forum -- http://honorguard.uberclan.com/temp/freswinn.txt (http://honorguard.uberclan.com/temp/freswinn.txt) -- about the spring-loaded bolt launcher, which is essentially a compact crossbow, and trip wire for traps and the likes.

Now, here's the reason I bring it up HERE of all places...  Perhaps at some point in the game there are very large beasts that you must bring down, like much-aged minotaurs or perhaps a relative of our favorite frost giant... Reminiscent of QfG2's elementals, it could be perhaps a task of yours to stop these beasts in their tracks by setting up traps, having recieved training in doing so by some other character in the game.

Perhaps it removes the high-fantasy element of the game and pushes it into one of the misnomers of "steampunk" or "clockpunk," although it would certainly create an interesting, fifth character class if you took that route.  Trapper, or Hunter, or something along those lines.

Anyone who can't tell, I'm something of a fan of steampunk and clockpunk, so obviously I would be a bit prejudiced to believe this is a good idea.  Others who aren't might care to smack me about a bit with the blue herring (that's the one that embodies logic, not trickery).

Title: Monsters
Post by: Corsair5 on July 16, 2005, 03:47:41 AM
Yeah, steampunk is pretty cool if implemented right. I just don't want to see someone waving around a flintlock or something.

Title: Monsters
Post by: Reish Vedaur on July 16, 2005, 03:49:50 AM
Agreed, even if they are classy.

EDIT: What I mean to say is, games that do things like that, giving you a weapon just because it looks good... they lose the heart that made them what they were.  Final Fantasy is terrible nowadays because of it.  If you have an entire military force with an air force and navy and they're all using rifles.... why in the world would you have a sword?

Title: Monsters
Post by: Corsair5 on July 16, 2005, 05:57:15 AM
I get exasperated with every main character in a game using a sword. I mean, use a spear or an axe for once!

Yeah, that is weird. You've got guys using jets and bombs, and infantry with rocket launchers and assault rifles, but you're using a normal sword? Energy blades I understand..but just a sword?

Title: Monsters
Post by: Silverbolt on July 16, 2005, 08:04:21 PM
Yeah, but did you see the SIZE of those things?

Plus, I'm quite partial to swords also. Guns run out of ammo and break down, but give me a katana and...whooo!!!

Title: Monsters
Post by: Corsair5 on July 16, 2005, 10:38:44 PM
Yeah, but one bullet in the right place, and all the sword skill in the world won't save you. And we're talking about automatic weaponry. Spray you up and down, and it won't make a difference that you're the best swordsman in history.

Title: Monsters
Post by: Reish Vedaur on July 16, 2005, 10:56:32 PM
Even up until the needlegun, the sword was still a somewhat viable weapon in combat; but really, the flintlock rifle and bayonette were what took it out of widespread use outside of the navy.  And even there, it changed things.  That's when rapiers, sabres, cutlasses and main gauches took over the part of the broadsword, heater shield and chain mail.  A good sabre or cutlass was still useful even in the American Civil War, if you could get close enough to use it obviously.  The needlegun increased the rate of fire and efficiency of powder to the point that swords were completely useless.

You know, the gatling gun was used only twice in the Civil War, as well as the first Browning machinegun in one battle.  I believe only the Japanese military used the gatling gun as a ground weapon more than three times or so; until they were installed on aircraft, they were virtually never touched.  It actually has its routes as the very first revolver, called the pepperbox, which was the first cap-and-ball weapon as well.

Blah blah blah blah.

That was the point, lol

Standing across from some guy with a high-powered rifle, he shoots you and it deals how much?
6 damage.
Your turn, you slash him with your sword.  It does how much?
150 damage.

Well, there are a few examples of the sword and shield overpowering an army of men with flintlock rifles, mostly Scottish.

See, the Scots had developed a system for fighting against the Brits.  They'd charge forward until they prepared to fire a volley, then they'd crouch with their shields up and the bullets would mostly just ricochet right off of them, and they'd get back up and charge again and tear everyone apart cuz they didn't have the weapons the Scots had.

But they had seen something before that was really devastating to advancing armies and decided to implement it: the pike square.  I can't remember which army did it, but they armed about 100 men with 12-foot pikes and marched them out in a square formation, and no matter what direction you came at them, they could turn and maneuvre and spread out like a porcupine and you couldn't hardly get through.

So they took this idea, making every other soldier on their front line a pikeman.  Problem mostly solved.  Later on, they came up with the bayonette, and now everyone had the best of both worlds.

Post by: Ignus_Draconus on July 18, 2005, 08:47:15 PM

Or maybe he just like using geometric shapes as defensive formations.

Another thing...they give people in video games these HUGE swords. They're taller than they are, and a lot of times, thicker as well. It's ridiculous! The people aren't using swords, they're using cleavers!

Title: Monsters
Post by: Reish Vedaur on July 18, 2005, 11:21:45 PM
Sometimes.  Cloud certainly qualifies. And the guy with the gunblade (gunswords, gundaggers and gunaxes do actually exist and were used, typically by sailors, but they were sabres, not Cloud-sized "clevers" as you and a lot of other people put it).  And let's not forget the keyblade in Kingdom Hearts.

I would not have a problem with these weapons, if they allowed for leverage and realistic handling, not just.. superhuman strength built into a slender lightweight guy that couldn't lift it well enough to swing it in the first place.

As for the pike square... military tactics copy and adapt off of each other; otherwise they'd be useless, wouldn't they?

By the way... The very first battle that involved the needleguns was also the very first battle that washed over into a town and, essentially, created urban combat.  I believe it was the Franco-Prussian war, but I won't swear to that.

I know this topic is months out of use, but I feel some issues need to be addressed.

Dude, it's not real, they're allowed to carry swords and use them Advent Children style against people with guns purely for sheer coolness factor. If every game had to be anally realistic, most of them wouldn't be fun.

Oh and it's a CAWS (with a 'C') autoshotgun, but it's never been taken into production. The US armed forces went with a Benelli instead.

As for why always a sword instead of an axe or a spear... no real intelligent reason, just that swords look cooler. I know what I'd rather have. That and a sword is more of  duelling/close combat weapon, axes (especially halberds) and spears tend to be massed-ranks weapons and there fore not really lone hero potential. A knight's chirished weapon was his sword, but the weapon he used more often was the lance.

Oh and the Buster sword is less a cleaver (although that is an apt description) and more of a bearing sword. You should see some of the crazier Zweihanders (ala Soul Calibur), MASSIVE.

i quite like guns and swords together
my favourite weapon is actually the gunblade from FF8
although for that i would combine a blade with a shotgun  ^_^

in a D&D game my friend plays an artificer crafter and i managed to convince him and the DM to craft me a gunblade.
nothing overly powerful of course, the basic idea was a bastard sword combined with a small crossbow.
fire as per crossbow until melee then use as a b.sword.
had to spend the cost of a bsword, a small crossbow, attaching together, spend a feat as well.
on a crit (if reloaded) i can fire my crossbow together with the attack from the b.sword as a free action (roll to hit normally).
it was a pretty cool concept and i loved having 1

i'm looking forward to hiring some black market people to attach a vibroblade to my blaster in star wars if/when we start playing  ;)

Yeah guns are still pretty cool. I'm currently working on several different types of blade/firearm combinations for the Modern Fantasy add-on for the roleplay I'm writing.

My favourite gunblades were actually the ones from Advent Children rather than FF8's gunblades.
